Whispers of the Morning

The streets were still dark, the only sign of the day’s arrival being the faintest hint of sunlight creeping over the horizon. The crisp winter air was cold against Aanya’s skin as she bundled herself tightly in her warm clothes, each layer adding a bit of comfort against the chill. She wasn't used to being up this early, but today felt different. Something about the quiet of the morning—just before the world woke up—pulled her outside.

The city was still sleeping as she stepped onto the bus, the only sounds being the low hum of the engine and the soft rustle of her scarf as she adjusted it around her neck. The warmth inside the bus contrasted sharply with the cold outside, making it feel like a small, safe bubble in the midst of the world’s silence.

Aanya found an empty seat by the window, settling into the corner. The streets were still empty, bathed in the soft glow of streetlights, and she found herself enjoying the rare peace of the moment. It was almost serene—the city, just about to wake up, before the rush of people and noise would begin.

She was staring out the window when a voice broke through her thoughts.

“Well, well,” the voice said, light and teasing. “What are you doing up this early, Aanya?”

Startled, she turned to see Arjun sliding into the seat next to hers, his usual easygoing smile in place.

Her surprise was immediate. Arjun? At this hour? She hadn’t expected to see him here, of all places, in the stillness of the morning. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice betraying the surprise she felt.

“I could ask you the same thing,” Arjun replied with a soft laugh, clearly amused. “It’s not exactly the time I usually see you out and about.”

Aanya blinked, unsure of how to respond, but before she could say anything, he grinned, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

“Not a morning person, huh?” he teased gently. “You look like you’re still in your bed, just with a lot more clothes on.”

Aanya couldn’t help but laugh at his observation, a little embarrassed but also finding his playful tone endearing. “I guess you could say that,” she replied, adjusting her scarf. “I’m just... not used to being out this early.”

Arjun chuckled, clearly not surprised by her answer. “Well, I’m usually up at this time. Early mornings are the best for getting some quiet in before the world starts moving too fast. I’m off to practice, actually.”

Aanya looked at him in mild surprise. "Practice? That early?"

“Yep,” Arjun said, his tone light, almost as if it were second nature. “I’m used to it. There’s something peaceful about the mornings, you know? No one else around to disturb the calm.”

Aanya nodded, feeling a soft warmth spread through her at his words. It was strange, but there was something soothing about the idea of using the quiet of the morning for something productive.

“You’re right,” she said after a moment, looking out the window. “It’s nice. Everything’s so still.”

Arjun leaned back, his voice light and easy as he responded. “You look like you could use more mornings like this,” he said, his tone playful but with a hint of curiosity. “Maybe get used to it?”

Aanya smiled softly, the teasing feeling easy to respond to. “I’m not sure if I’m ready for that,” she replied lightly. “But today... it’s kind of nice, I guess.”

They both sat in a comfortable silence, the sound of the bus engine filling the quiet moments. Aanya glanced at him occasionally, still surprised to see him here, of all times. Arjun seemed so natural in the quiet of the early morning, as if it was where he belonged.

She found herself feeling a little more at ease as the bus rolled on, the city starting to wake up around them. The peace she had been craving that morning seemed to stretch a little longer with Arjun’s easy presence beside her.

As the bus neared her stop, Aanya stood up, glancing at Arjun as she gathered her things.

“It was nice talking to you, Arjun,” she said with a small, warm smile.

He returned the smile with a wink. “Anytime, Aanya. And hey, maybe next time, you’ll be the one with the early-morning energy.”

Aanya laughed softly, feeling a warmth in her chest as she stepped off the bus. The day ahead still felt uncertain, but the unexpected peace of the morning, and the surprise of Arjun’s company, made it feel a little brighter.
